THE HONDA PLEDGE
THE HONDA PLEDGE
The Honda Pledge is from the 2024 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.
The story:
This is part of the pledge made in the mid 1950s by Soichiro Honda and Honda’s vice president, Takeo Fujisawa. Here, Honda pledged to enter the Isle of Man TT Races. The TT was the premier motorcycle event of the time: not only was it the ultimate test of man and machine, it was also part of the World Championship series. For an aspiring motorcycle manufacturer such as Honda, it was critical that the company had a presence at the event. And so The Declaration of Entry to there Isle of Man TT Race was made public on March 20, 1954. The declaration reads: “Let us bring together the full strength of the Honda Motor Co. to win through to this glorious achievement. The future of Honda Motor Co. depends on this.” This pledge ultimately prophesied Honda’s juggernaut success in the motorcycle industry and a decades-long success story at the TT.
The pledge is projected here.
